More explanation to the last email . We all know free enterprise can run a business much better than the government . One only has to look at countries where Free Enterprise does not exist or is heavily regulated and taxed where no profit is possible . I live part time in Argentina and speak with much knowledge on this , as well as own and spent lots of time in many communist and Socialist countries .   Here we go in brief

Local Chambers and CVBs ---running for-profit media products using others money and if they need more they just go ask for it and most cases receive it from members dues, DMO monies from local bed tax etc, State matching Grants, funds from for profit ventures. Google ranks them number one in most cases Free Enterprise is at an extreme unfair disadvantage !!!! Again Hilton Head is a perfect test and example. Read all at

Latest update: The Hilton Head Island/Bluffton Chamber of Commerce has retained a law firm in Charleston to address my questions. To date, no law suits. The firm's name is Young Clement Rivers LLP. We are represented locally and chose to support local businesses, even law firms. The Chamber once again takes business out of our community. If they did what was right, they would not have to spend members' and tax payers' money to answer my questions because there would not be any questions. The abuse continues. Our attorney has researched members’ rights and we all have rights to a lot of information that the Chamber has yet to provide even though it was requested. We have also requested an opportunity to review documentation which is required by South Carolina law to be maintained on site by the Chamber and made available for inspection upon any member's request, but as of this update we have not been provided that opportunity.

If we had a separate VCB /CVB in charge of $5M dollars of members’ dues and tax monies versus our Chamber with high overhead we would have much more than $1.5 M to market the Hilton Head brand to the world. The numbers speak for themselves, we have decreased for the last 14 years from 2.5 Million visitors to 1.8? A loss of a possible billion in revenue to our local economy? The fix is easy, we need a separate VCB and thus a separate board for the VCB made up of marketing professionals. While our coverage of the Chamber may seem critical to some, we have always offered simple solutions as well.

It is our opinion that the Internet has eliminated many of the roles that Chamber's were created to serve.  What brings people here is our residents, our beaches, our golf courses and word of mouth. Certainly having a $3-$5 million ad budget for internet and social marketing, along with traditional media, would help to increase our numbers, instead of spending much of the money on overhead and for archaic marketing methods.

What needs to happen?

BRAVO!!!!! It is soooo wonderful to see someone finally taking a stand on the abuse and neglect of organizations. You are my new hero Mr. Hoagland!!!! I was going to join the chamber because of what I believed it stood for and had no idea of the abuses.

Whatever the next action is, if you need bodies, I’m in! Thank you so much for looking out for your fellow business persons. You are appreciated more than you will ever know!!! Thank you again.
